Dungeons and Dragons is one of the most popular rpg(roll playing game) board game that I know of. I have never played it myself but after a short interview with one of the founders of the brand new D&D club, I decided to join too!

Q: What is D&D? What does it stand for? And what happens in a typical game? How does one play? Etc.

A: Dungeons and dragons is the father of pretty much all tabletop role playing games. It came out in 1974 as a simple tabletop RPG (role playing game). It has the players make a character completely customizable, like a blank canvas, with your imagination as the paintbrush. You can choose between multiple preset races and classes, or choose from “home brew” races and classes, which are fan made. Races in d and d are Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, Gnomes and many other mystical beings. A typical game of d and d consists of the Game master or Dungeon master playing as the “god” of the game, seeing if your actions succeed or fail. They have sets of rules they have to follow and they take many notes, they are the storytellers in a sense of a grand adventure with choices made by the players to set where the story will lead next. How someone plays dungeons and Fargo s is pretty simple, get a piece of paper or print of a character sheet, have a pencil with you, mental math, and a set of dice. You use the dice to simulate randomness when you make an action. You can either critically fail or critically succeed, or go somewhere in between.

Q: How long does a game last?

A: Well it depends how long you keep the campaign or story going. Usual meetups are either between 2 hours long or 5. Sometimes people play all through the night, to morning if they are dedicated enough.

Q: How does this games differ from other games like D and D?

A: Well each game has their own specific rule set and races and classes, but it mostly stays the same. There are multiple editions to dungeons and dragons and some games stem on one of those editions.

Q: What/who gave you the idea of creating this club?

A: It kind of hit me during the summer when I was playing d and d with friends over a group chat. It was basically an idea that I shared with two people, Stephen Terhurne and Alexander Johnston. They were the co founders of the club in a way. Stephen was the one that got me into dungeons and dragons and Xander expanded my knowledge of dungeons and dragons.

Q: Are going to be competing with other schools or will this be for purely recreation?

A: This game is purely recreational, and just a fun creative to spend your time with close friends.

Q: When did you start playing D and D? Who has been your favorite character so far?

A: I actually started playing d and d during 8th grade. I found a group of people that actually played it during lunch. It was actually a lot of fun and I had a great time. I would eat my lunch as fast as possible, clear my tray and make room for my character sheet. I don't really have a favorite, I enjoy every single character I play. Each one of them have had the weirdest and funniest things happen to them and it's hard to choose.

Q: How much creative energy is needed for a game like this

A: A lot of energy, if you enjoy books like Harry Potter or the Lord of the rings Trilogy, it goes by a lot smoother. It looks complicated and mysterious from the outside, but once you play it, you can get accustomed very quickly. Mental math is all you need. A character sheet has most of the basic information on it, but all you are doing is adding and subtracting numbers. It also has basic information on your characters abilities and skills.

Q: What day to day skills are needed in game play? What skills are enhanced over a long time period of play?

A: Literally all the skills you need to play are logic, teamwork, and basic conversation holding, because what you say, will affect the story. Because sometimes you can talk yourself out of tough situations.

Q: What advice do you have for new players?

A: Stick it out, it starts off rough if you don't know what you're doing. But ask people for help and they can help you through it, that's what Dungeon masters are for! They know the rules and they can help you through your adventure. Once you start playing it more often it becomes easier to pick up new things introduced to you.

Q: How do people get involved and sign up?

A: Ways you can get involved are by contacting me at Rschloesser@stpeterschools.org or by contacting Mr. Wolfe at Twolfe@stpeterschools.org. The group meets every Tuesday after school in the room across from the student services office. We are also specifically look for dungeon masters, you can get more info on that if you just ask
